Vitamins - Facts on A, B, C, D, E, K
Vitamin A
One of the most popular vitamins, A was the first fat-soluble vitamin to be discovered. The body acquires some of its vitamins A and C through animal fats and beta-carotene and other carotenoids abundant in many fruits and vegetables. Vitamin A commonly taken as a dietary health supplement to help promote healthy eyesight and to help us to resist infection. Vitamins boost immunity by enhancing the infection-fighting actions of the white blood cells called lymphocytes. They are also vital to the growth of bones, skin and hair.
• Promotes healthy vision*
• Helps prevent infections such as colds, flu, and bronchitis*
• May help fight cancer - some research indicates that this immune system booster may be of value in combating breast and lung cancers and in increasing the survival rate of leukemia patients. It may also protect against the development of a melanoma (skin cancer)*
• Used to treat skin disorders, such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea.
• Helps maintain healthy hair, and may prevent flakiness of the scalp.
• May help with the gastrointestinal system - vitamin A may ease symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease and ulcers.
The RDA for vitamins A is 5,000 IU daily for men, and 4,000 IU daily for women.
Taking excessive amounts of vitamin A can cause serious health problems. In terms of vitamin A in foods, the body makes only what it needs from carotene rich fruits and vegetables. However with certain 'preformed' vitamin supplements which have been synthesized, it can be possible to take too much. It is also wise not to take it in supplement form alongside isotretinoin or other acne drugs, which may cause high blood levels of vitamin A and negative side effects.
